Stanley was born at 18 Maple Grove in Toxteth on 1st March 1908 - his father was Phillip Gerrard (born in Dublin). He spent most of his working life as a market trader (demonstrator) although he worked for his brother Harold Gerrard (Gerrard & Gerrard Ltd) for some years as a driver in his transport business. He was also a sparring partner at Pudsey Street in Liverpool and later travelled with fairgrounds as a boxer in the boxing booths.
